The problem in the north

Agricultural burning has become a hot topic in Portugal, as thick smoke hangs in the air, reducing the quality of the air we breathe. A solution was presented here in the form of ‘biochar’. Burning agricultural waste at high temperatures not only significantly reduces the smoke emitted but also produces ‘biochar’: a type of charcoal that retains moisture, is rich in nutrients and promotes plant growth.

The result

The demonstration enjoyed an enthusiastic participation and support of local councils, educational institutions, agencies and forces such as the GNR. These photos illustrated an excellent turnout whilst also doubling up as educational pieces to further their mission.
The prospect of a cleaner, safer and more breathable air for Portugal is just a breath away.
